England claim the 6 Nations as Ireland thump the Italians!

Well, after three weeks of doleful reports, finally something to get excited about! There was a meagre try scoring return in the first three matches, but on Saturday Ireland scored just the nine, not quite taking in order of jersey number, but scoring fairly well at will. In fairness it wasn’t Italy’s strongest team…but then it wasn’t our strongest team either, with a lot of young players coming for on Ireland later in the match. Lots of superlatives, it’s a pity that our earlier results mean that we’re out of it, but we worked hard and deserved that score.

England v Wales was billed as the championship decider, and on the evidence of the first half, England will be well deserving champions. However, on the evidence of the second, that might be thanking their lucky stars that the halves are 40 minutes long and not 45! I think there’s a bit of the Irish in the Welsh – they don’t feel comfortable when they’re on top – but when they’re down – suddenly it’s – so you’re disrespecting us! Well we’ll show you! They mounted an unbelievable comeback that silenced the crowd, but it wasn’t enough. It’s a pit for them ( and their fans) that they didn’t play more in the first half.

Finally, Scotland v France was an all action event, neither team in the mood to lose, but it was Scotland’s consistency that got them over the line. France showed a lot of flair, but mistakes and indiscipline hamstrung them. That first victory for Scotland is their first over France for 10 years, and handed England the Championship, thoroughly well deserved at that.

Saturday, March 12
Ireland 58 - 15    Italy
England 25 - 21    Wales
Sunday, March 13
Scotland 29 v 18 France
